The President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll
2013 Announcement
The President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, launched in 2006, annually highlights the role colleges and universities play in solving community problems and placing more students on a lifelong path of civic engagement by recognizing institutions that achieve meaningful, measureable outcomes in the communities they serve.
The 2013 Honor Roll recipients will be announced at the American Council on Education's 95th Annual Meeting, Leading Change on Monday March 4, 2013, in Washington, DC. The 2013 Honor Roll includes:
2013 Honor Roll Presidential Awardees
La Sierra University takes a “cradle to career to college” approach to help local children reach their full potential. Using the Promise Neighborhoods model, La Sierra students applied their minds, talents, and increasing professional skills to provide children with coordinated education, family, social service, and community programs.
For the past 21 years, fall orientation at Nazareth College has kicked off with a day of service. The school manages liability for service placements, provides or coordinates transportation to most sites, and formally considers service in the admissions process.
The communities surrounding Georgia Perimeter College's (GPC) Clarkston and Decatur campuses are among the most underserved in the greater Atlanta area. Each has a multitude of needs—which translate into service-learning opportunities for GPC students.
With a service learning program dating back to 1991, Gettysburg College prepares its graduates to be “active leaders and participants in a changing world.” Students don’t have to go far to see firsthand this changing world—or be a positive force in it.
Responding to disparities in economics, educational achievement, and access to health care, UConn faces a "challenge" other institutions envy: "Student interest exceeds our capacity, at least for now," says Matt Farley, UConn's associate director for community outreach. "It's a good problem to have."
