Volunteer Opportunity
Location: Des Moines, IA Posted by: The Blood Center of Iowa
Start: 12/25/2008
End: 12/31/2010
Opportunity Description: Blood donors save lives! Each year, thousands of Iowa residents give selflessly of themselves by making a blood donation. Through this simple act, donors create the vital link between life-giving blood and the hospital patient who needs it. In fact, more than 2,000 units of blood are needed each week to maintain an adequate blood sup-ply in our community and to meet the rising transfusion demands. There is no substitute for blood – only humans can provide blood for other humans.
May we count on you to join the select group of dedicated citizens who help us meet this goal? Make an appointment through our website today and join our partnership in saving lives!

Volunteer Opportunity
Location: Des Moines , IA Posted by: Visiting Nurse Services
Start: 12/15/2008
End: 12/31/2009
Opportunity Description: Visiting Nurse Services (VNS) has provided public health services in Polk County for 100 years. Today we are witnessing the health care crisis unfolding among our clients especially in our Adult Health Program. The Adult Health Program, a public health funded program, works with clients who are uninsured and underinsured and in desperate need of medical attention.
Today the norm is to get released from the hospital early. It is not unusual to still have wounds requiring care. If you are insured most often you are able to receive follow-up nursing care. If you are poor, uninsured or have no payment source you return home in dire need of care but have no money to purchase the care or critically needed supplies.
Visiting Nurse Services, through public health funding, can assist those who have no other ability to get care, yet, the numbers of clients needing help has tripled while the public health dollars to provide services has been cut. VNS has funding for five nurses to serve clients for the entire Polk County area. The need for supplies is just as crucial. Prior to the health care crisis, our typical client was elderly and in need of services for monitoring a chronic disease. Funding is directed to staff to provide follow up care. Today a client profile might be a 45 year old recovering from cancer surgery or an acute illness. They may lack funds to buy insurance much less money to purchase sterile dressings for 30 days while the wound heals.
We are seeking support from area churches and civic groups to hold a supply drive for our Adult Health Program.
Days: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
Tasks for Volunteers: Collect the following supplies for the Adult Health Program:
Sterile dressings in the following dimensions:
4” x 4”
5” x 9”
2” x 2”

Petroleum jelly
Antibiotic creams such as:
