Volunteer Opportunity
Location: Boston, MA Posted by: Partners for Youth with Disabilities
Start: 01/01/2008
End: 12/31/2013
Opportunity Description: Being a teenager is hard; being a teenager with a disability is harder.
The world around them is far more apt to focus on their disabilities than their abilities. The social isolation created around these teens impacts their lives and affects their friendships and their academic and career success. Partners Online (POL) aims to improve the employment, education and life skill outcomes of youth with disabilities by adding new ways to share learning on its innovative Web site and developing creative learning modules which foster group learning, reflection and discussion.
POL is a powerful virtual community which advances Partners for Youth with Disabilities' (PYD) 23 year mission of empowerment of youth with disabilities and their families. POL provides an accessible and secure technology platform where mentoring and learning can take place anytime and anywhere and can reach people with disabilities isolated by geography, mobility and poverty. Centered on transition-age youth (14-24) and their parents, POL removes the obstacles that youth with disabilities experience to create a flexible, participatory learning community where screened participants can log on and correspond about key disability issues via discussion forums, group chats, email, IM, and personal profiles.
POL needs abled and disabled mentors for its online group mentoring program. Adult mentors are required to submit to CORI background checks, a telephone interview, and reference checks. Online training in group mentoring is provided. Applications for Youth, Mentors and Parents can be completed and submitted online at http://pyd.org/apply/index.htm.
Days: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
Tasks for Volunteers: Applicants to POL must have a valid email address (this is not shared with other members of the community but is necessary to activate an account.) Applicants are asked to log-in at least weekly to check messages, announcements and respond to other user posts, to complete an online user profile, and to complete occasional user surveys (which helps us improve the program and continue to secure funding support). End: 12/31/2009
Opportunity Description: Ashoka's Youth Venture believes in the power of young people to lead positive social change in the world. We invest in teams of youth (12-20) to create, launch and lead their own community-benefiting projects, clubs, businesses, initiatives or organizations - Ventures. United Way of Tri-County is a community building organization that brings people together to care for one another.
