“We have an opportunity to make a better nation.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a holiday for many schools and businesses. Congress has designated it as a national day of volunteer service. Instead of taking a day off from work or school, Americans are challenged to “celebrate Dr. King’s legacy by turning community concerns into citizen action” (“mlk.gov“http://www.mlk.gov). And serving others is one of the best ways you can nurture assets in children and youth.

Volunteer Opportunity
Location: Newton, NC Posted by: Palliative CareCenter& Hospice
Start: 12/16/2008
End: 12/16/2009
Opportunity Description: Volunteers are a vital part of hospice work, caring for patients at the end of life and also their families. Nurses, chaplains, volunteers, and more provide supportive visits for the ill person and their family members. Volunteers are particularly needed to provide companionship and affection to patients. Family members tell us that the small things, like running errands, reading aloud, or just listening make all the difference to patients and caregivers alike.
Yet African-Americans are underrepresented nationally in the ranks of hospice patients. Many families try to take care of their loved ones alone, without the benefits of the nurses, chaplains, nursing aides, etc. of the hospice care team. African-American volunteers are underrepresented also. Our goal at Palliative CareCenter & Hospice is to serve more African-American patients, and recruit more African-American volunteers, to serve the needs of families in Catawba, Burke, Iredell, Caldwell, Alexander, and Lincoln Counties. We are dedicated to the belief that "Everyone deserves hospice care."

End: 12/31/2009
Opportunity Description: Looking for small groups to provide team coverage to a very old or very disabled adult (or couple) who needs help with the ordinary chores and activities that healthy people take for granted. The team would communicate among themselves to determine which member(s) provide what service and when.
These assignments would be on-going - definitely not one-time only. Teams would be guided by Center staff but would be largely self-managed and autonomous. Each team must designate a leader to be the Center liaison. Teams can evolve over time with changes in membership or level of participation.

Tasks for Volunteers: Examples: Transportation (medical appointments, stores, govt offices), Chores (neatening up house or yard), Friendly Visiting (social contact in the home, phone calls, outings), or Respite (sitting with a homebound person while the caregiving family member leaves the house).
